Leukemia Cup Regatta Sails Past a Milestone

Gary Jobson

At the end of June, the Leukemia Cup Regatta passed the $50 million mark in support since the first event was held in Birmingham, A.L., in 1987. The Leukemia Cup Regatta has grown throughout North America, and now there are more than 40 races in 38 states, plus Canada.

Cruising World editor at large Gary Jobson, who was a member of Ted Turner’s America’s Cup crew in 1976, has served as the national Leukemia Cup Regatta chair since 1993. He was diagnosed with lymphoma in 2003 and underwent a stem-cell transplant. Jobson has been disease-free since.

The name change fits the progression of the business as the company, owned by Dave and Kristen Conrad, also becomes a full-service brokerage for boat lines including Marlow-Hunter, Jeanneau and Gemini.

“My wife, Kristen, and I have owned the company since 2008 and the timing is right to upgrade the business name to one that reflects the scope of our marine services,” Dave says. “Not many locals realize that the largest American Sailing Association-certified sailing school and second largest yacht charter fleet on the Great Lakes is located right here in Traverse City. This expansion makes us one of the largest sailing centers on the Great Lakes.”

The company’s Learn – Sail – Own program gives clients greater options, says general manager Paul Davis. “We’re unique in that we are one of the few dealers in the country that offer new-model sailboats for sale and for charter,” he says. “You can schedule lessons or charter time on your dream yacht to really get a feel for whether owning it is right for you.”

With additional charter operations in Charlevoix and Cheboygan, Great Lakes Sailing offers more than 20 charter sailboats ranging in size from 30 to 45 feet, and a nationally recognized, award-winning sailing school that offers basic to advanced sailing courses on cruising monohulls and catamarans. In 2012, GLSC added the Boat Club, offering economical membership sailing with a fleet of smaller daysailers of 20 to 25 feet. The company also services and delivers boats to charter companies in the Caribbean.

Book Drive Benefits Island Schoolchildren

Moorings, book drive

Yacht charter company The Moorings is currently hosting a book drive at its corporate headquarters in Clearwater, Florida, for the children of Hopetown Primary School located in Elbow Cay, Abaco Bahamas. The school was founded in 1893 and educates children from kindergarten through the sixth grade.

The book drive was developed after Vinny Mattiola, a recent charter guest of The Moorings, and his crew took time to visit the school and donate over 200 books during a sailing vacation through The Bahamas.

“We were delighted to find so many books waiting for us,” said Hopetown Primary Principal Justin Higgs. “Thank you so much. The kids said it felt like Christmas!”

The Moorings’ book drive will continue through Friday, July 18. Donated books will be sent to The Moorings base in The Bahamas, and then delivered to the school on a bareboat yacht excursion hosted by Mattiola from August 16 through 22.

“This is just the start. We plan to continue hosting book drives for local schools for all of our different bases,” said Shannan Brennan, Head of Global Marketing for The Moorings. “We’re incredibly proud to give back to these local communities that have given so much to us.”
